What does your YOUniform look like? It’s what you wear when even the tiniest task gives you a headache, when you’d rather relax than be on your A-game. It’s your go-to style for lazy days and extended quarantines, plus it’s the perfect opportunity for some #selfcare and fashion reflection. So, practice a little TLC with a few looks that say, “I did all this without even trying.”
Make self care a priority
If you’ve been putting your “me time” on hold for a while, you’re not alone. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic began, many of us were placing too much emphasis on everything but ourselves. Still, a month-long yoga retreat isn’t the only answer. Sometimes, we just need to work on our wardrobe to relax in a more comfortable and confident style.
Self-care fashion focuses more on luxury than utility. It’s not just something we wear when we’re struggling with the day. It’s an uplifting and supportive style choice that results in improved confidence and a better mood.
Neglect to treat yourself every once in a while and things can get crazy. But when modern life revolves around staying busy 24/7 or being stuck in the house with too much free time, it can be difficult to prioritize self care. So, here’s how I stay sane and look great while doing it:
1. Choose timeless, not trendy
Choose pieces that won’t go out of style in a year or two. Instead, try to anchor your look with classic, high-end pieces that capture attention while effortlessly transitioning from one part of your day to the next. Here’s one of my favorite examples:
Notice that it’s cute, comfortable, and detailed without being overly complex. To me, it’s the perfect look for a self-care day that might turn into something more. I always choose solid base-color pieces that are cozy and versatile.
2. Layer in your personality
Try to add some flair and personality with tasteful layers that can be removed easily if they get in the way. Think jewelry, hats, scarves, and other accessories that spice up your outfit without much effort. Here’s an example:
This is a simple look that I like to create that just feels cozy. Plus I can swap out a few minor accessories to make it work for evening events if I want.
3. Keep it loose and low
Did you know that constrictive clothing like tight pants and high heels can trigger some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression? So ditch the stilettos and skinny jeans for something that’s more flattering to your silhouette (and sanity). Give your brain and body some breathing room without appearing completely disheveled. Here’s an adorable loose and low look I like to create on my off days.
Look at how the cut of my outfit is flattering without being form-fitting. Notice how I kept the colors basic so any accessory would work. I can wear this while binge watching Netflix but still get up to answer the door in style.
4. Be confidently comfortable
Dress comfortably, but don’t forget to wear something that makes you feel good about yourself. I understand the gravitational pull of a pair of ratty joggers but trust me — you don’t want to look too sloppy. That will do nothing for your mental and/or emotional state, especially if you run into someone you know.
5. Stay easy, breezy, and beautiful
Primping is still important on self-care days, even if you don’t go all out. Dry shampoo, creative braids, hats, and scarves are a great way to style your hair without taking all day. Here’s a sample of what I mean.
Check out my loose-fitting shirt, flat shoes, neutral color palette, and easy updo. It doesn’t take me long to create a look like this, but it’s timeless, practical, versatile, and perfect for a fun afternoon in town.
6. Hide a visual reminder
I like to keep or wear a little something that makes me smile. Sometimes it’s a handwritten personal mantra stuffed in my pocket. Other times, it’s an engraved Bible verse on a piece of jewelry or a zippy scarf with a whimsical print. The point is to add a piece of your heart into the ensemble just in case you need a friendly reminder throughout the day.
