Right now, a lot of us are working from home for the first time, and many of those who were already used to it are dealing with new challenges: homeschooling kids or spouses suddenly underfoot.
Working from home is great because it gives you the freedom to handle business in your own way and at your own pace. But without motivation, it’s easy to get distracted or miss out on important opportunities. Here are ten simple tips that will keep you focused and productive!
1. Turn on Concentration Music or Play White Noise
There are numerous studies that show listening to certain noises improves memory and focus. Instrumental music and white noise are especially helpful at keeping you motivated. Pop on the binaural beats or relaxing rain sounds to soothe your brain and body into “the zone.”
TIP: Set the volume at a level that still allows you to process thoughts.
2. Talk a Bit Before You Get Started
Mid-project is not the time to discuss what’s on your mind. Instead, dump your brain before getting started so you can really hone in on the task at hand. Talk about your worries and flesh out ideas ahead of time to prevent distractions. It’s also a great way to gather inspiration for creative projects.
3. Think of It as Your Own Business
Even if you’re working for someone else, take ownership of your work and you’ll find motivation. Tired of doing the same thing every day? Think of the bigger picture!
TIP: For a confidence boost, consider the importance of your contribution to the company you work for.
4. Wear Comfortable Clothing
Some at-home jobs require you to sit down at a desk for long periods of time. Wear breathable, stretchy materials as often as you can and don’t forget to grab a sweater in case you get chilly. Check out some of my favorite work-from-home outfit ideas that are comfy and stylish!
5. Use Ergonomic Furniture and Equipment
The wrong desk or chair can really slow you down. So, look for something comfortable, but supportive, whether that’s a ball chair or standing desk. NYMag put together a great list of ergonomic office furniture.
6. Grab Some Snacks and Drinks
The right snacks keep you focused and productive — but that doesn’t mean munching on chips all day! Keep healthy snacks at-hand, like nuts, dark chocolate, popcorn, and roasted chickpeas. And don’t forget about water! Hydration is equally important. My favorite healthy smoothie provides valuable nutrition and hydration at the same time.
7. Do Some Stretches
Sitting too long is bad for your physical and mental health, so get up and stretch your muscles every once in a while. People who move around during each shift feel less exhausted when their workday is done.
TIP: Set an alarm on your phone as a reminder to get up and stretch for 3 to 5 minutes once every two hours.
8. Set Small Goals and Give Yourself Rewards
One of the best ways to stay productive is to set achievable milestones. Then, every time you reach a goal, you can give yourself a reward: a social media break, a walk with the dog, or a piece of dark chocolate.
9. Enjoy Energizing Scents
Scents are energizing and keep your brain alert, so keep options like peppermint, eucalyptus, and sage close by. The aroma will permeate your senses and leave you feeling more alert and focused.
TIP: Get an essential oil diffuser or use incense that burns for several hours at a time.
10. Break Up the Monotony
It’s hard for anyone to stay motivated when they’re working on the same task for hours. Consider setting a timer for half an hour or an hour. When the timer goes off, move on to the next task!
Common distractions to avoid
It’s super easy to get distracted when working from home. Here are the top things to avoid:
- Text Messages. Turn your phone on silent or airplane mode to avoid distracting messages from friends and family, or even put it on the other side of the room.
- Social Media. Social media is a black hole; before you know it, you’ll have spent half an hour watching videos on TikTok!
- Television Shows. You can get sucked into a TV program faster than you can say, “I quit.” Leave the TV off, even if it’s muted.
The takeaway
It’s a blessing to work from home, especially these days. But it also comes with its own challenges! Stay motivated and productive by creating a comfortable, functional work environment from the inside out.
