I have a confession to make: I’m addicted to my daily matcha latte!
Matsu ‘to rub’ + cha ‘tea’ = matcha
I quit drinking coffee for about a year because my body suddenly couldn’t handle the caffeine. Almost overnight, the tiniest amount would make me anxious, moody and even more sluggish. Benadryl gives me energy, so I’m a freak of nature!)
A couple of months ago, I read a New York Post article about Victoria’s Secret models flocking to Cha Cha Matcha for their matcha latte. I was on a mission to find out where I could get my hands on this miracle powder made from green tea leaves.
So what makes a matcha latte the superfood super drink of teas? Here are the health benefits of matcha:
My tea obsession began, and Starbucks quickly lured me back when they started offering matcha lattes. I was back in my happy place with baristas misspelling my name and lines of indecisive coffee addicts. But I didn’t care – my customized matcha latte was addictively tasty. Then I found out why: their matcha powder is laced with 50% sugar.
That means my “healthy” Starbucks matcha latte with almond milk and SUGAR-FREE vanilla syrup has more than 20 grams of sugar. Every gram of sugar came from the matcha powder …. NOT the milk or syrup!
I’m obsessed with cutting sugar from my diet because this Ted talk convinced me it’s more dangerous than heroin. So, I consulted my health guru – Amazon – and quickly found that not all matcha is created equal. After agonizing over whether I needed “cooking grade” or “ceremonial grade”, I opted for the best since it would be the star ingredient in Whitney’s Magic Smoothie and my new matcha latte recipe.
Whitney’s Matcha Latte Recipe:
**WARNING: the following content may not be suitable for matcha purists. Whisking not involved.
- Heat a cup of almond milk on the stove top or in the microwave (get it very hot since it will take 3 minutes to make)
- Pour in blender (Vitamix preferred)
- Add 1 tablespoon matcha (this one is the most quality ceremonial grade I’ve found)
- Add 1 packet of Truvia … or agave, dates, anything BUT sugar (aka heroin)
- Add a dash of cinnamon
- Blend for 2 minutes (to get frothy)
And there you go – the easiest Matcha Latte recipe you’ll ever find! Guaranteed.
