The Power of Red

Red: it signifies power, boldness, and confidence. Whether you’re choosing lipstick or attire, don’t grab a the daring hue unless you’re feeling adventurous and want to make a statement.
The color Red (it deserves to be capitalized) represents all things emphatic – stop signs, fire trucks, Wonder Woman’s costume, Louboutin’s shoe sole, and the #1 used emoji of all time: ❤

You know me, I gotta go deeper than just making it all about what I have on…outfit details alone are boring, right?  Let’s dive into the psychology behind it.  Stay with me…

Red is a powerful color, so use its energy to communicate the emotion in the color wheel below. It will be seen and heard; make no mistake!
As you can see, the color is completely contradictory and extreme, so it’s associated with superhero powers, danger, fury, or extreme love and passion.

I’m all for visual symbolism and find it interesting that the women in the Handmaid’s Tale wear crimson robes yet they’re not allowed to speak unless spoken to.  That emotion evokes the right side of the wheel: danger, war, violence, and hopefully symbolism of them breaking free and finding their power and independence.  Deep thoughts with Whitney…

I’m not into fashion rules (I’ve been wearing white year round for a long time), but sometimes it’s NOT the best color choice.

1. Job Interview

This does seem pretty logical – you may look provoking for male interviewers and create a rivalry for females.  To play it safe, say no to red dresses and lipstick when a job offer is on the line.

2. Weddings

I always refer to the wedding invitation for dress code AND color theme. If it’s all blushes and nudes, and/or the bride is pretty subdued, avoid at all cost outshining the bride with a screaming “look at me” dress.  However, if it’s black tie, by all means: red dress + red lips = killer look.

  8. Hey Whitney. Interesting read about the color ‘red’. Being a Man, I must admit that I would look upto ladies wearing red dress, lipstick or heels and get easily overpowered by them. Lately, I have seen ‘black’ in vogue, specially with lip and nail color. What do you feel about black?

        • Oh, such a great question…. I feel women look good in anything they feel confident in. However, I think red speaks louder than black and a little more bold. A combination of both is always great!

          • So, Lets say that you are stylist with a job of dressing up and makeover of a female CEO with only red and black from head to toe. What would be the perfect look. Love to hear your idea 🙂

          • It would have to be a bright red suit with either a black or cream blouse and matching heels! If you get a chance, look up “Blake Lively on Good Morning America 2012”. There is just no comparison to an all black!

  12. Wow. I just loved her ‘red suit’ with black blouse/heels look. Actually, I have a task of dressing up my boss. I believe dress is sorted out now, all thanks to you. Can you help me with makeup, hair and accessories etc. She is 5’11 , fair skin, black shiny long straight hair.

    • I was referring to the one for Bake Lively red suit, suggested by you. I just need to figure out the makeup, shoes and accessories. It would be great if you can give me suggestions and even direct product links to buy.

      • I would for sure go with some gold accessories! Nothing too bold and chunky though because you dont want to take away from the outfit. You want it to speak for itself. So maybe some thin dangle earrings if her hair is up… some smaller studs if her hair is down. Do not go overboard with accessories because the suit is so bold you do not want to cloud up the look. I would not pair a necklace but maybe a small thin bracelet would be good. A small clutch (black) would go great with this and black heels. For the makeup I would do a smokey eye with a nude color lipstick. I would not wear red lipstick due to it becoming too much and red shades are so hard to match!

  21. I must be the most boring person in the world. I’ve only owned 1 red dress and I recently took it to habitat because I’ve only worn it once. I’ve got to start wearing more colors. This is perfect on you and I love the jean jacket with it.

  25. Lovely dress! Red is such a strong color but I really love wearing it time to time. Usually I just tune my look with red heels, red bag and/or red lipstick. A red dress could be a cool addition to my closet though. And btw, you look absolutely stunning in that dress, Whitney!

  26. I have never thought black tie equals red but now that you’ve said it, it’s totally something I want to do. I don’t wear red often as it clashes with my hair but it’s one of my favorites for sure.

  35. Red has been my all time favorite. I recenyly wore a red lace dress on Easter and got so many compliments.
    Also love how you added that denim jacket. Looks chic and stylish!

    • Thank you so much!! With this dress there could be many colors or additions added to make it a different outfit each time you wear it and I think that is what I like most!
